How to Remove the Shopify Password Page
The password page is a lock. Take it off when a stranger can finish checkout.
- Path
- Online Store, then Preferences
- While it is on
- Visitors see a password page
- You can preview
- Logged-in staff still see the theme
- Before you remove it
- Product, payment, shipping, policies
- After
- The store is public
What visitors see
With the password on, a visitor who is not logged into the admin sees a password page. Shopify’s guide says you can change the message on that page. Staff can still open the theme preview.
Leave the password on while the homepage is empty. An open store with no product and no rate looks abandoned.
What has to exist first
One active product, a payment method, a shipping rate for the customer’s country, and policies. Those are the last steps in How to Create a Shopify Store.
In Pakistan the payment method is a provider the admin shows, or a manual method, as Shopify Payments in Pakistan explains.
Turn it off
Online Store, Preferences, Password protection. Disable the password and save. Open the store in a private window so you see what a customer sees.
If the private window still shows the password, you saved the wrong preference or the browser is showing an old copy. Try the myshopify.com address directly.
One order after it is public
Place a small order to your own address. Refund it if you do not want the goods, using the path in How to Refund a Shopify Order.
A development store can use the Bogus Gateway. A live store uses a real payment. The difference is in How to Place a Shopify Test Order.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the Shopify password setting?
Online Store, then Preferences, under Password protection.
Can I work on the theme while the password is on?
Yes. Log into the admin and use the theme preview. Visitors still see the password page.
When should I remove it?
After a product is active, a payment method works, a shipping rate shows for your country, and the policies are written.
I turned it off and still see the password.
Open a private window and load the primary domain. Confirm the preference saved, and that you are looking at the right store.
Is the password a customer account password?
No. The storefront password is a lock for the whole shop. Customer accounts are a separate setting at checkout.
Public means a stranger can pay
Turn the password off, then buy one product yourself from a private window.
