The myshopify.com address works on day one. A domain you own is the address you put on a card and in an ad.

The address you already have
When you create the store you choose a myshopify.com name. That address keeps working after a custom domain is connected. Shopify’s domain guide treats it as the permanent store address.
The store name is step two in How to Create a Shopify Store. Pick a name you can say out loud.
Buying through Shopify
Buying inside Settings, then Domains, lets Shopify manage the DNS. You pay the registrar fee Shopify shows at checkout. Renewal is a yearly charge. Read the price on that screen.
A .com is the usual choice when it is free. A country ending is fine when the name you want is taken and the ending is one your customers recognize.
Connecting a domain you own
If the domain is at another registrar, Shopify shows the records to add, often an A record and a CNAME. DNS can take time to update. The admin shows a connected state when it has verified.
Leave the old host’s email records in place if you receive mail at that domain. Connecting the website should not delete MX records.
Primary domain
The primary domain is the one in the browser bar and in Shopify’s emails. Set it after the domain shows as connected. Other domains redirect to it.

It can be minutes or longer. The Domains page shows when Shopify has verified the connection.
Should I launch on the myshopify.com address?
You can take a test order on it. Put the custom domain on before you send the store to customers.
Verify, then make it primary
Connect the domain, wait until Shopify marks it connected, and set it as primary before you share the link.
