What a free shipping bar does

A free shipping bar on Shopify shows the shopper the gap between the cart and free shipping. Free Shipping Bar Pro is that bar. The merchant sets a threshold and three messages: one before the goal, one when the cart is close, and one when free shipping is unlocked. The amount placeholder fills in the gap left in the cart. Bar color and text color are set in the app.

It is a theme app extension. The announcement-bar embed can sit on every page, including vintage themes. Online Store 2.0 themes can use the header app block instead. Settings sync to a shop metafield the storefront can read. You do not open a theme file and paste a progress-bar snippet.

The portfolio example is a £50 threshold and a £34 cart, so the bar can say the shopper is £16 away. At the threshold the line becomes “You’ve unlocked free shipping!” Use your own threshold. The example only shows how the three messages and the placeholder fit together.

How to add the free shipping bar

Add the bar after the store can take a product and a shipping rate. If the store does not exist yet, start with How to Create a Shopify Store, then come back for the bar.

  1. Open Free Shipping Bar Pro

Free Shipping Bar Pro is the Shopify app for this bar. It is a theme app extension, so the bar is not a snippet you paste into the theme code. Open the app from the TechnoSpike portfolio.

  2. Set the threshold

Choose the cart total that unlocks free shipping. Use the same number you will enter as the free-shipping rate in Shopify. A portfolio example uses a £50 threshold. Your number should be the one your store can actually afford.

  3. Write the three messages

Write the line for before the goal, the line for when the cart is close, and the line for when free shipping is unlocked. The success line in the portfolio example is “You’ve unlocked free shipping!” The amount placeholder fills in the gap left in the cart, so a £50 goal and a £34 cart can read as £16 still to go.

  4. Set the colors

Pick the bar color and the text color. Keep the text readable on the bar. Check it on a phone, where the announcement bar is a thin strip.

  5. Turn the bar on

Use the announcement-bar embed if you want it on every page. That embed also runs on vintage themes. On an Online Store 2.0 theme you can instead add the header app block. Settings sync to a shop metafield the storefront can read.

  6. Match it in Shopify shipping

In Shopify shipping settings, add a free-shipping rate at the same threshold. Place a test order under the goal and another over the goal. The bar and the checkout should tell the same story.

The bar and the shipping rate are two settings

Free Shipping Bar Pro draws the bar. Shopify’s shipping settings decide whether checkout actually charges £0. Set both to the same threshold. A bar that promises free shipping at £50, while the rate starts at £75, trains people to distrust the store.

Test two carts. One under the goal should show the remaining amount. One over the goal should show the unlocked message, and checkout should apply the free rate. Preview both on a phone. The announcement bar is short, so a long message can wrap. Trim the sentence until it fits.

After the bar is live

The bar answers “how much more until shipping is free?” A product photo still needs a reason to be opened. Product Label Pro is the Shopify app for a typed badge such as Sale, New, or BOGO. It is free, $2 a month, or $4.99 a month, with one theme embed and no theme code. The two apps do different jobs: one on the cart goal, one on the product card.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add a free shipping bar on Shopify?

Install Free Shipping Bar Pro, set the cart threshold for free shipping, and write three messages: before the goal, close to it, and once free shipping is unlocked. An amount placeholder fills in the gap left in the cart. Turn on the announcement-bar embed, which works on vintage themes, or add the header block on an Online Store 2.0 theme. You do not paste a snippet into the theme. Then set the same threshold as a free-shipping rate in Shopify’s shipping settings, so checkout matches the bar.

What is a Shopify free shipping bar?

A Shopify free shipping bar tells the shopper how close the cart is to free shipping. Free Shipping Bar Pro shows that as a bar and a sentence, such as the amount still left to add. The bar is a theme app extension. The shipping rate itself is still set in Shopify, under shipping settings.

Where does the free shipping bar appear?

Free Shipping Bar Pro can sit as an announcement bar on every page, including vintage themes, or as a header app block on Online Store 2.0 themes. Settings are stored in a shop metafield the storefront can read. Preview the homepage and the cart on a phone after you turn it on.

How much does Free Shipping Bar Pro cost?

The Pro plan is £2.99 a month or £29.90 a year. That plan includes the threshold, the three messages, the amount placeholder, and the bar and text colors.

Does the bar change my Shopify shipping rates?

The bar prints the message and fills in the amount left. You still create the free-shipping rate in Shopify’s shipping settings and use the same threshold. If the bar says free shipping at £50 and the rate starts at a different number, shoppers will see a promise checkout does not keep.

What should I add after the free shipping bar?

If the store is new, follow the TechnoSpike step-by-step guide to create the Shopify store, and the complete Shopify course on YouTube. When a product needs Sale, New, or BOGO on the photo, install Product Label Pro. The product-label guides on this site cover the app, the price, and the comparison.

Set the threshold, then match it in shipping

A free shipping bar on Shopify is the sentence and the progress toward a cart goal. Free Shipping Bar Pro is the app that draws it, without a theme snippet. The Pro plan is £2.99 a month or £29.90 a year. Keep the Shopify shipping rate on the same number.
