Shopify Trends in 2026
Sidekick took the admin. Checkout got tighter. The product card still needs a badge you can install without editing the theme.
These are the changes Shopify published, not a survey of store revenue. The Winter 2026 notes are the Winter ’26 Edition. The spring notes are the Spring ’26 Edition, the merchant announcement, and the developer announcement. Figures below are Shopify’s own.
- Admin
- Sidekick on the admin home and in the mobile app
- Apps
- Sidekick app extensions, from 17 June 2026
- Agents
- Universal Commerce Protocol, merchants on by default
- Checkout
- Clearer delivery options, a stronger pay button, ship or pickup per item
- Storefront
- Theme app extensions, including product labels
Sidekick became the place merchants work
The clearest Shopify trend in 2026 was Sidekick. Shopify’s developer post for the Spring ’26 Edition said weekly active shops using Sidekick were up 4x year over year in the first quarter. The Winter ’26 Edition already had Sidekick Pulse, which turns a store’s sales, traffic, and inventory into next steps, and it let merchants find and install apps in Sidekick, with Built for Shopify apps marked more clearly.
The Spring ’26 Edition put Sidekick at the center of a redesigned admin home. It can keep working in the background, ask a follow-up when it needs a choice, and run from any screen in the Shopify mobile app by typing or voice. Shopify also described Sidekick on Apple Watch for business insights. The practical change for a merchant is that the first screen of the day is a suggestion, not an empty menu.
Apps started answering inside Sidekick
On 17 June 2026 Shopify opened Sidekick app extensions to app developers. A data extension lets Sidekick search an app when the merchant asks a question. An action extension sends the merchant to the right screen in that app, with the form filled in, and the merchant confirms before anything changes. Shopify’s changelog names eighteen launch partners, including Klaviyo, Loop, Smile, Judge.me, Checkout Links, and Matrixify.
That is a distribution change. An app that only lives in its own admin screen is harder to reach when the merchant starts in Sidekick. Product Label Pro does not ship a Sidekick extension. It still does the storefront job: up to three typed labels on the product, one theme embed, no theme code.
Agentic commerce got a protocol
Shopify’s Spring ’26 merchant post describes the Universal Commerce Protocol, co-developed with Google, as the open standard for an AI agent to go from finding a product to checkout. Shopify said merchants are UCP-enabled by default. An agent that uses the protocol has to follow that store’s checkout rules, discounts, and customizations.
The developer post says an agent builder registers an agent profile in the Developer Dashboard and calls a public endpoint, rather than applying for access. For a store owner, the trend is that a product can be bought from a conversation somewhere else, and the rules of the Shopify checkout still apply. A title, a description, and a real price matter more when the buyer never opens the theme.
Checkout got shorter, and payment choice stayed the point
The Spring ’26 Edition redesigned checkout. Delivery options are easier to scan, the pay button is more prominent, and a phone user scrolls less. Ship and pickup can be chosen per item in the same order. Shopify described that as moving from developer preview to general availability. The Winter ’26 Edition had already let merchants customize checkout and customer accounts per market, including B2B, in the editor.
A tighter checkout does not invent a new way to pay. The method still has to be turned on for the country. Pay-by-bank is the checkout work behind Fena: the shopper approves the payment in their banking app and the money lands in the merchant’s account. Qasim Malik has built those plugins since 2020, on Shopify and on WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce, Wix, PrestaShop, OpenCart, and GoHighLevel. That is a payment method next to cards. It is not a claim that Fena was a feature in the Edition.
The product card still changes through an app embed
Sidekick and UCP change how a merchant runs the store and how an agent reaches checkout. The collection grid is still a grid of photos. A short label, Sale, New, or BOGO, is still how a card gets the click. Product Label Pro is the Shopify app for that sentence. You type up to three labels, pick pill, ribbon, or outline once, and turn on one theme embed. Plans are free, $2 a month, or $4.99 a month. The app launched on 24 September 2026. The public review is one 5.0 rating, from Sky-Vapes in the United Kingdom.
The same pattern is why theme app extensions mattered before Sidekick. You do not edit card-product.liquid to print a word on a photo. The guides are Product Labels for Shopify, the sales article, the comparison, the price ranking, and the Shopify apps map.

Frequently asked questions
What were the Shopify trends in 2026?
The Shopify trends in 2026 were Sidekick as the admin assistant, Sidekick app extensions so apps answer inside that chat, agentic commerce through the Universal Commerce Protocol, and a redesigned checkout with clearer delivery options. On the storefront, theme app extensions stayed the way to add a badge without editing the theme. Shopify published this in the Winter 2026 and Spring 2026 Editions.
What is Shopify Sidekick?
Sidekick is Shopify’s AI assistant inside the admin. In the Winter 2026 Edition it recommended apps and next steps from store data. In the Spring 2026 Edition it sits on the admin home, works in the Shopify mobile app, and can use data from partner apps. Shopify said weekly active shops using Sidekick were up 4x year over year in the first quarter.
What is the Universal Commerce Protocol?
The Universal Commerce Protocol, or UCP, is the open standard Shopify described in the Spring 2026 Edition, co-developed with Google, so AI agents can move from product discovery to checkout. Shopify said merchants are UCP-enabled by default, so an agent has to follow that store’s checkout rules, discounts, and customizations.
What changed in Shopify checkout in 2026?
The Spring 2026 Edition redesigned checkout so delivery options are easier to scan, the pay button is more prominent, and there is less scrolling on a phone. Buyers can also choose ship or pickup per item in one order. The Winter 2026 Edition added checkout and customer-account customization per market. The price and the shipping rate still belong to Shopify.
Do Shopify stores still need apps in 2026?
Yes, for the job an app is built for. Sidekick can recommend apps and, through Sidekick app extensions, read some partner apps. It does not draw a Sale badge on a product card. Product Label Pro is the theme app embed for a typed Sale, New, or BOGO label, with no theme-code edit. Plans are free, $2 a month, or $4.99 a month.
Where can I learn these Shopify changes?
Start with Shopify’s Winter 2026 and Spring 2026 Editions. On TechnoSpike, the step-by-step store guide and Lecture 1 of the complete Shopify course cover creating the store. The product-label guides cover the badge on the product card. Qasim Malik records the course and builds the Fena pay-by-bank plugins.
Use the admin assistant. Keep the badge on the card.
The Shopify trends in 2026 put Sidekick in the admin and a protocol in front of checkout. The collection page did not stop being a grid. Install the label app when the card needs a sentence, and read Shopify’s Editions when you want the platform notes in their own words.
