How to Set a Shopify Free Shipping Threshold
The threshold is one number. The bar and checkout both have to use it.
- Threshold
- Cart subtotal, in the shop currency
- Checkout
- Automatic free shipping discount at that subtotal
- Bar
- Three messages, with {{amount}} for the gap
- Price
- $2.99 a month, 7-day trial
The number you can afford
A free shipping threshold is the cart subtotal where shipping becomes $0. Shopify can express that as a shipping rate with a minimum, which is covered in setting up shipping rates, or as an automatic free shipping discount. The customer should see the same number before checkout and at checkout.
Free Shipping Bar Pro stores one threshold. The app default is 50, in whatever currency the shop already uses. Change it to the subtotal your product prices can support. A threshold far above a typical cart is a goal almost nobody reaches. A threshold under the cheapest product is free shipping on the first item.
What gets saved at checkout
Saving the threshold creates a Shopify automatic free shipping discount titled Free shipping (Free Shipping Bar Pro). It applies when the cart subtotal is greater than or equal to that number, for every shipping destination, on one-time purchases. It can combine with product discounts and order discounts.
Change the threshold later and the same discount updates. Uninstalling the app deletes that discount. Shopify’s own page for this discount type is free shipping discounts. The written setup for rates, zones, and the name the customer sees is How to Set Shopify Shipping Rates.
The sentence on the storefront
The bar uses the same threshold. An empty cart shows the initial message, and {{amount}} is the full goal. A cart under the goal shows the progress message, and {{amount}} is what is left. A cart at the goal shows the success message. The default lines are “Add {{amount}} more to unlock free shipping!”, “You’re {{amount}} away from free shipping!”, and “You’ve unlocked free shipping!”
The fill is the cart item subtotal divided by the threshold, capped at 100 percent. Money uses the currency on the cart. There is no separate currency picker. The step-by-step for turning the bar on is How to Add a Free Shipping Bar on Shopify.
Check two carts
Place a test order under the goal. The bar should name the amount left, and checkout should still charge shipping. Place another at the goal. The bar should show the success line, and the free shipping discount should apply. Test orders are covered in How to Place a Shopify Test Order.
If a product or order discount changes the subtotal, the bar and the discount both follow the subtotal, because the discount is allowed to combine with those. Read the cart after the discount, on a phone, before you publish the theme.
