A discount is a rule in the admin. The word Sale on a photo is only honest when that rule exists.

A code
A discount code is a word such as WELCOME10. At checkout the customer enters it and the total changes. Shopify’s discount guide covers percentage, fixed amount, and free shipping codes.
Set an end date if the offer is temporary. An expired code should fail at checkout with a clear message.
An automatic discount
An automatic discount needs no code. It applies when the cart matches the rule, such as a minimum quantity. Use it when you do not want the customer to hunt for a word.
Too many automatic discounts on one cart are hard to explain. Start with one.
Limit who gets it
You can restrict a discount to products or collections, set a minimum order, and cap how many times it can be used. A store-wide code on a single test product is how you check the math.

The label on the photo
A Sale badge is a separate app. Product Label Pro types the words on the card. Those words should match the discount. If the code is 10 percent, the badge can say 10 percent off.
A badge with no discount trains customers to ignore badges.
