How to Add a Product on Shopify
A product page needs a title, a price, and at least one photo before it is worth publishing.
- Path
- Products, then Add product
- Required to sell
- Title, price, and a way to ship
- Status
- Draft until you are ready
- Dropshipping
- Inventory will be stocked at the supplier
- Weight
- Used when a rate depends on weight
The fields that matter first
Title, description, media, and price are the fields a customer uses. Shopify’s product guide walks through that form. SKU and barcode can wait until you have more than a handful of items.
Compare-at price is the crossed-out number. Use it only when the item had a higher price. A compare-at price with no real reduction teaches people to ignore the badge.
Inventory and the supplier
If you hold the stock, track quantity at your location. If a supplier ships, set Inventory will be stocked at to that fulfillment service. That field is explained in How to Fulfill a Shopify Dropshipping Order.
Leave Continue selling when out of stock off until you know the supplier can still send the item.
Weight and the shipping rate
Enter a weight if your shipping rate uses weight. A missing weight can hide a rate at checkout. Rates are set in How to Set Shopify Shipping Rates.
Physical product should stay selected for something you post. A digital file uses a different product type.
Draft, then active
Active means the product can appear on the store. Draft means it stays in the admin. Publish after a payment method and a shipping rate exist, which is the order in How to Create a Shopify Store.
Lecture 1 of the course shows the same first product. It is How to Setup a Store.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add a product on Shopify?
Open Products, then Add product. Enter a title, description, price, and photo, then save.
Should a new product be active immediately?
Save it as a draft until checkout has a payment method and a shipping rate. Then set it to active.
Where do I attach a dropshipping supplier?
On the product, set Inventory will be stocked at to the fulfillment app or custom fulfillment service that ships it.
Do I need a SKU?
A SKU helps you match the item to the supplier later. Shopify will save the product without one.
What is compare-at price?
The higher number shown with a line through it. Use it when the current price is lower than a price you actually charged.
One real product is enough to test
Add one item you can order yourself. Checkout with it. Then add the rest.
