Shopify Product SEO
The search listing is the title and description a search result can show. Shopify fills them from the product until you edit them.

The title
Shopify’s SEO guide says the page title is what search results can show as the link. Use the product name a customer would type. A phone case title that includes the phone model is more useful than the word Case alone.
Keep the title specific. Repeating the same five keywords on every product makes the pages hard to tell apart.
The meta description
The meta description is the sentence under the link. Say what the item is, who it fits, and one practical fact such as the material. Shopify may rewrite a snippet, so the product description should carry the same facts.
The visible product page is a different field. Writing that page is What to Write on a Shopify Product Page.
The handle
The handle is the last part of the URL. Shopify builds it from the title. Shorten it if the title is long, and keep the model name. Changing a handle later breaks old links unless you add a redirect.
Create the handle once, when you publish, and leave it.
Alt text is part of the same job
The image alt text is edited on the media, not in the search listing. That step is Shopify Product Photos and Alt Text.
A title, a description, and an alt that all name the same product are enough for a first launch. Extra apps can wait.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I edit Shopify SEO for a product?
On the product, open the Search engine listing preview and edit the title, meta description, and handle.
What should the SEO title be?
The name of the product, including the model or size a customer would search.
Does Shopify write the meta description for me?
Until you edit the listing, Shopify can use the product description. Replace it when the description is long or vague.
Can I change the URL later?
Yes, but old links break unless you redirect them. Set the handle when you publish.
Do I need an SEO app on day one?
No. The search listing fields on the product are enough to launch.
